The longest-serving National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), May Agbamuche-Mbu, has assumed leadership of the commission in an acting capacity.
NEWSFLASHER reports that her appointment follows the formal handover by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who officially stepped down as INEC Chairman. The brief ceremony took place at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja during a consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Meanwhile, emerging reports suggest that Yakubu’s early exit may have been influenced by the registration of several new political parties under his leadership.
According to Vanguard, the commission had already processed around a dozen registrations out of 110 applications. Yakubu reportedly considered this initiative part of his “end-game legacy” — a way to widen Nigeria’s democratic space.
However, it was later discovered that one of the newly registered parties was allegedly being set up as a “backup platform” for a powerful politician eyeing a governorship seat in the South-East.
The revelation reportedly angered the sitting governor of that state, who quickly raised the matter in Abuja. By the end of last month, Yakubu was directed to begin his terminal exit and hand over the reins to the most senior national commissioner — a role now occupied by Agbamuche-Mbu.
