Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will address the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 24.

A revised provisional list of speakers showed that Tinubu will speak on the second day of the high-level general debate.

The Nigerian leader is scheduled to deliver his remarks during the afternoon session around 8:30 pm local time (2:30 pm Nigerian time).

Tinubu will be the 17th speaker on the day, according to the updated list.

The debate will feature 195 world leaders, including 98 heads of state, five vice-presidents, 44 heads of government, four deputy prime ministers, 37 ministers, one crown prince and four chairs of delegation.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, president of Brazil, will open the debate, followed by Donald Trump, president of the United States.

Sources at the UN said the list may still be updated, and Tinubu’s slot could change if he fails to attend the debate in person.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu in 2024, speaking on the first day of the general debate in what diplomats described as a rare diplomatic privilege.

The theme of the 80th session is “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights”.

The session opened on September 9 with Annalena Baerbock of Germany inaugurated as president of the general assembly.

Baerbock, a former foreign minister, is the fifth woman to preside over the assembly.

The high-level week of UNGA 80 will run from September 22 to September 30, with events including the commemoration of the UN’s 80th anniversary, the SDG Moment, the climate summit, and the launch of the global dialogue on AI governance.
