Her reporting emphasizes the toll on soldiers deployed to conflict areas for extended periods. Many endure repeated exposure to violence, witness comrades being killed, and live far from their families with limited communication. Civilians face loss of livelihood, disruption of education, displacement, and trauma. Women often bear the responsibility of protecting their families, while men may be targeted in attacks or suffer in detention.
Reflecting on her work with soldiers, Nagarajan said, “I spent years in Borno State engaging with soldiers. While I was living there, one of the things I did was give them training on human rights, humanitarian law, civilian protection, and how to reduce harm to civilians during their operations. I really gained an insight into what they go through.”
