Lagos Speaker Obasa speaks on 2027 governorship rumours, says APC has the final decision

Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has stated that he is open to contesting for a senatorial or gubernatorial position depending on the decision of his party.

Obasa disclosed this on Thursday during an interview with Television Continental.

The lawmaker addressed past remarks about his political ambitions, saying his interest in higher office remains valid but is subject to party consensus.

His words: “Every politician has ambitions, but you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next.

“If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction.”

He said that while personal aspirations are legitimate, final decisions must reflect the party’s strategic considerations.

Obasa, who recently survived a leadership crisis that temporarily unseated him as Speaker, also hinted that he may not seek another term in the assembly.

Asked if he would pursue a fifth term as a legislator, he replied, “Not really,” suggesting his focus is shifting to higher political roles.

His comments come amid speculation over possible successors to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, whose second term ends in 2027.

Obasa has been the speaker of the Lagos assembly since 2015.
