Nigerian disc jockey Gbemisola Kudirat, popularly known as DJ Kulet, has shared more insight into the difficult experiences that shaped her teenage years, revealing how a troubled upbringing and repeated negative encounters at spiritual centres influenced her behaviour as she grew older. She made the disclosure during an appearance on the Talk To B Podcast on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
DJ Kulet explained that as she reached adolescence, unresolved emotional wounds and the confusion created by those early experiences pushed her into relationships she later regretted. She described a period in her life when her sense of self-worth was fragile, leading her to engage in intimate encounters that left her feeling empty and distressed. Small financial gifts from partners, she noted, often became a misguided measure of affection, and the cycle reinforced her loss of self-respect.
She said; “When I grew up to the age when I started having sex, sometimes I cry after having sex because I wasn’t doing it for money, I was doing it for fun. I would ask myself what I have gained from the nonsense I just did. They would sleep with me and pay me 5,000 Naira, 10,000 Naira and anyone who gives me up to 50,000 Naira is probably in love and the next time he would give me 4,500 Naira, I lost my respect since he had sex with me, not until Jesus steps in. How did I overcome it? I was hearing the word of God.”
She recounted moments in which she would be overwhelmed with guilt afterwards, recognising that she was not acting out of need or pressure, but out of emotional vulnerability. According to her, the turning point came when she began immersing herself in spiritual teachings and gradually rebuilt her confidence through faith. DJ Kulet stated that reconnecting with her beliefs helped her break free from the damaging patterns that had taken root in her youth. She credited this renewal with helping her regain clarity, restore her self-worth, and move past the trauma that had defined her early years. Read Original
