Three police officers were killed on Wednesday morning when gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to local sources, the incident occurred in the border town, which shares a boundary with Kwara State.

The assailants reportedly stormed the checkpoint and engaged the police in a fierce gun battle.

“The attackers came for their guns, which they carted away. Three officers died in the exchange of fire,” a source said.

Videos show vehicles allegedly used by the attackers as they fled the area.

Earlier on Wednesday, bandits launched an overnight attack on Bokungi in Tsaragi community, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing one person and rustling hundreds of cows.

The attack, which occurred around midnight, targeted Fulani settlements belonging to Alhaji Garuba and Alhaji Mumini.

Witnesses said the assailants arrived at about 12 a.m., shooting sporadically to scare residents before carting away nearly 1,000 cattle.

During the raid, Mumini’s first son, Muhammadu, who was married just a month ago, was killed.

A source explained that when the attackers failed to force open Garuba’s door, they proceeded to seize all his livestock.

“They came through Bokungi, firing into the air. Everyone ran for safety. They moved nearly 700 cows and passed through Fengewa before soldiers and vigilantes attempted to intercept them,” the source said.

Residents criticised security forces for failing to make what they described as a “real effort” to stop the attackers.
