El-Rufai, ADC Leaders Shun Police Invitation, Make New Move

Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State have shunned a police invitation and instead taken fresh action against the state’s Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu.

On Monday, El-Rufai submitted a petition to the Police Service Commission (PSC), accusing the commissioner of “unprofessional conduct, abuse of office, and serial violations.”

Recall that police operatives, last Thursday, sealed off the ADC state secretariat and invited El-Rufai and six other party leaders for questioning over alleged “conspiracy, incitement, mischief, and disturbance of public peace.”

However, El-Rufai has chosen to petition the law enforcement agency.

In a statement by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai said he chose to petition the PSC following what he described as the failure of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to address earlier complaints. He alleged that some officers of the Kaduna command had acted in ways “unbecoming of their calling” since Rabiu assumed office on December 30, 2024.

“I am writing out of concern that the Nigeria Police, warts and all, is the only frontline law enforcement institution we have,” the statement read. “The duty of all citizens is not only to support it at every level but also to ensure that the commission enforces discipline and ethical conduct at all times.”

The former governor accused some officers of serving “interests other than those conferred by law,” insisting such behaviour had damaged the image of the force and weakened public trust.

Sources close to El-Rufai suggested the petition was linked to recent police actions that allegedly targeted his political associates. However, details of the alleged misconduct were not disclosed in the petition made available to the media.

A police summons dated September 4, 2025, and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Uzairu Abdullahi, had earlier directed the ADC chairman to produce El-Rufai and six others at the State CID on September 8 to clarify allegations filed by unnamed complainants.

Those invited included Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (a.k.a. “30”), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (a.k.a. “Mikiya”).

That same day, security operatives sealed the ADC secretariat at No. 4 Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, hours before the scheduled visit of the ADC North-West leadership. The visit was meant to commiserate with members injured during a violent attack by suspected political thugs the previous week.
