The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has released a security advisory warning American citizens in Nigeria to exercise caution ahead of a planned protest tagged “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now”, scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory.
In the alert issued on Friday, the Embassy urged U.S. nationals to avoid Eagle Square, the Central Business District (CBD), and other potential protest zones, noting that demonstrations could disrupt movement and pose safety risks.
The Embassy further advised that movement across Abuja be minimized during the protest. It also recommended that children remain at home and domestic staff commuting from outside the city suspend travel into Abuja for the day.
“There may be roadblocks, heavy traffic, and possible clashes between security forces and demonstrators around Eagle Square and the CBD,” the advisory stated.

To ensure safety, the Embassy urged Americans to steer clear of large gatherings, remain vigilant, monitor local media for updates, and maintain a low profile.
The planned protest is being championed by Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, who earlier this month announced his intention to lead the demonstration. Using the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, Sowore has been mobilizing support across Abuja and other parts of the country, demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu has been in custody since June 2021, following his controversial repatriation from Kenya. He is currently facing terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The latest alert follows a similar security advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy in June, which warned citizens to avoid Nigerian military and government facilities amid rising global security concerns.
At that time, the Embassy also placed restrictions on non-official travel for its staff and their families to such locations.
