Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has announced plans to lead a protest march on October 20 to demand the release of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore made the announcement in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, describing the planned action as a “historic” march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

“We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7 a.m.,” he wrote.

The activist revealed that he had earlier reached out to several prominent political figures, including Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to join the planned protest.

According to him, efforts to contact some of the leaders were unsuccessful.

“I have tried reaching out personally to Dr. Alex Otti, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, and Mr. Peter Obi (through his team) today. Alex Otti and Soludo neither took my calls nor responded to my messages. They promised to tell Peter Obi about our plans, although he is currently travelling,” Sowore stated.

He added that he also contacted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar through his team, while Senator Abaribe promised to return his call. Sowore further disclosed that he had spoken with Obinna Agwuocha, a member of the House of Representatives, who was “receptive and encouraging.”

The AAC leader said some members of the Abia State House of Assembly informed him that they were travelling to London next week and would return to Abuja to take further action, beginning with a visit to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to lodge a formal complaint.

“They didn’t anticipate a ‘placard’ protest. I told them that’s fine; what matters most is that we agree on a unified date for action,” Sowore noted.

He urged political and regional leaders to set aside differences and unite in calling for Kanu’s release, insisting that the moment required collective action.

“This is not the time for hesitation. If we genuinely believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deserves freedom, then every leader of conscience must act now, not later,” he said.
