The body of former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, has departed Abuja en route to his hometown in Edo State for burial, marking the commencement of his final journey.
Before the departure, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) held a solemn Guard of Honour Parade at the Police Air Wing Hangar, Abuja, on Saturday, September 27, 2025, to pay last respects to the late police reformer.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun described the late Arase as “one of the finest officers to ever serve in the Nigeria Police Force,” noting that his distinguished career was defined by integrity, professionalism, and dedication to service.
“This parade is not just a ceremony; it is our last salute to a man who devoted his entire life to public service. Dr. Arase’s legacy is a reminder that every career and every tenure will one day come to an end, but true service will endure across generations,” the IGP said.

The Police Chief highlighted Arase’s remarkable career trajectory, recalling that he joined the Force in 1981 and served in diverse roles, including District Police Officer, international peacekeeper under the United Nations Transition Assistance Group in Namibia, and as a key player in the fight against corporate fraud.
Arase made history as Personal Staff Officer (PSO) to three consecutive IGPs, a record yet unmatched. He later rose to become Deputy Commissioner of Police (CID, Lagos), Commissioner of Police (ICT and Akwa Ibom Command), Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Intelligence), and Deputy Inspector-General of Police (CID) before his appointment as the 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police in April 2015.
During his tenure as IGP, he championed groundbreaking reforms that emphasized discipline, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law. After retirement, he continued his service to the nation as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, where he brought the same vision and commitment to police oversight and reform.
“He believed that effective policing requires not just the strength of arms, but also the strength of character and compassion. His contributions will forever be etched in the history of the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP added.
Friends, family members, and colleagues also paid glowing tributes to the late police chief. A retired Commissioner of Police described him as a “brilliant conversationalist and a true Nigerian at heart,” noting that his humility and intellectual depth stood out throughout his career.
“There was no topic you could discuss with him that he wouldn’t engage eloquently. He set a standard for us to emulate — that when you find yourself in a position of authority, you must build relationships because those relationships will endure beyond your tenure,” he said.
Another speaker highlighted Arase’s dedication to reforming the Police Force, praising his accessibility, innovative spirit, and commitment to humanity.
“He was humble, creative, and deeply passionate about improving policing in Nigeria. His policies and reforms remain a legacy that will continue to shape the Force for years to come,” he said.
The late IGP’s body will be laid to rest on Thursday, October 3, 2025, in Edo State. The solemn ceremony in Abuja signified the start of a series of funeral activities to honor a man whose life was devoted to security, justice, and national development.
Dr. Solomon Arase will be remembered as a visionary leader, a reformer, and a patriot whose contributions left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security landscape.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
