The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagun, has dismissed claims by former Jigawa state governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, alleging that the party denied him the opportunity to contest for the position of national chairman.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Sunday, Damagun said Lamido’s allegations were baseless, stressing that the party followed due process in closing the sale of nomination forms.
“The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party had fixed September 13 to 22 for the sale of forms. Lamido did not purchase any form within that period. Now that it is time for screening, he is asking for forms.

“This party is not a beer parlour; it is guided by rules and procedures. The NEC has already laid down the process leading to the convention,” he said.
Damagun added that the PDP was not a charity organisation that compensates loyalists outside the law.
“We are governed by principles, not emotions. Simply because someone is a big man does not mean the laws should be bent to favour him,” he stated.
He further noted that many of those now criticising the process were themselves members of the NEC who participated in setting the timetable.
“There’s no justification for demanding that something already concluded should be reopened,” Damagun said.
He added that the party is exploring amicable solutions to internal disagreements.
He urged genuine loyalists of the PDP to remain focused on unity and progress.
“Not only he (Sule Lamido). Anyone who truly loves this party must think deeply, tell themselves the truth, and set aside grievances so we can work together to move the PDP forward,” he said.
