Joash Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says he is ready to collaborate with the national assembly to ensure a “credible, fair and free” electoral process across Nigeria.
Amupitan stated this while speaking at the 56th annual national conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT), where the Federal University of Lokoja (FUL) honoured him for his “dedication, hard work, and inspiration to many.”
Describing the occasion as “momentous,” the INEC chairman emphasised the foundational role of law in advancing society.

“Law is not merely a set of rules but a foundation upon which societies build their progress,” he said.
He reiterated that Nigeria’s electoral system is anchored on legal principles and expressed his commitment to actively engaging the national assembly in ongoing efforts to amend the Electoral Act.
“I will begin my participation in the national assembly to ensure that we develop an electoral process and laws that you, I, and all Nigerians can be proud of,” Amupitan added.
The INEC chairman explained that the ultimate goal of the reform agenda is to minimise post-election disputes and restore public confidence in democratic institutions.
“Let us not see electoral petitions in court,” he urged, stressing that the objective is to create a transparent and just electoral system that leaves little room for litigation.
