According to a report from ChannelsTv, Governor Agbu Kefas has halted his planned move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which was scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
The Taraba State leader announced on Tuesday, November 18, that his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been put on hold indefinitely.
Kefas explained that he decided to suspend the switch to the ruling party in response to the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
He said it would be insensitive to proceed with any major political activity when the nation is grappling with such a distressing security incident.
According to Channels Television, the governor stressed that the moment calls for sober reflection, unity, prayers, and collective action rather than celebration.
“In view of the tragic kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have made the solemn choice to delay my formal declaration for the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
He added that the country’s security concerns demand compassion that rises above political interests, emphasizing that the welfare and safety of children must take priority over any political ceremony.
Kefas had earlier announced his intention to join the APC and was expected to be formally welcomed into the party this week.
APC leaders had already begun consultations to choose a new date for his reception, with plans underway for a major event in Jalingo.
Once completed, Kefas would become the fifth PDP governor to defect, following Governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Duoye Diri of Bayelsa, among others.
The APC, through its official X handle @OfficialAPCNg, said a fresh date for the event will be communicated later.
Meanwhile, the PDP in Taraba State has been hit by a wave of resignations.
The state party chairman, Abubakar Bawa, stepped down on November 17, citing leadership turmoil and ongoing legal disputes at the national level.
His departure came shortly before the governor’s anticipated defection.
Additionally, the Taraba State House of Assembly speaker, John Kizito Bonzena, along with 15 other lawmakers elected on the PDP platform or who recently joined the party, have also abandoned the PDP for the APC. Read Original
