Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mohamed Ndarani Mohammed, SAN has recommended serious forensic examination and thorough investigation before retired civil servants and public servants-alike are allowed to participate in politics.
Ndarani Mohammed gave the insight on Wednesday while interfacing with newsmen at a press briefing held in Abuja.
The senior lawyer, who hinged his submission on craving for corruption in the country, regretted that despite flouting Section 88 sub-section 2,3,4,5,6,7 Nigerian politicians are hardly sanctioned for corruption.
His current advocacy, he noted, became necessary as a way of checkmating and scrutinise any retired public servant or civil servant who might have embezzled government treasury with the intent to use it in prosecuting electionneering campaigns or any other political activity.

While tasking Nigerians to hold leaders accountable and also take seriously their civic responsibility, the learned silk insisted that Nigerians deserved leaders, who lives modestly, account for every naira spent and put the nations welfare above personal gains.
He then called for stronger accountability measures to ensure that public resources are not wasted or divert into the private pockets of the few.
Speaking further, he urged President Bola Tinubu to apply the provision of Section 315 of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria as amended to reflect his legal opinion to save Nigeria from electing bad leaders into political office in 2027.
“As we approach the 2027 elections, i urge the president to create an enabling platform that will prevent retired civil and public servants from using their looted funds in contesting for election.
“Investigating them before and after office to know their financial status could also help prevent corruption and spending of any ill-gotten money on election campaigns and other activities,” the legal practitioner said.
The learned silk, who harped on the need to rid the political space of corruption, insisted that the corruption must stop if Nigeria must make progress.
Explaining further, Mohammed expressed worries that political office holders often get into politics without money only to come out as multi billionaire and multimillionaire with monstrous public assets and fund stashed away in foreign accounts.
Going forward, he recommended that all public servants and political office holders must be properly investigated, especially if found to have inexplicably huge amounts of money and assets that could not have come from legitimate endeavours.
“One of the fundamental measures that must be put in place is for all public servants to be investigated on retirement as well as political players to know their current asset.
“Anyone who retires from public service and almost right away jumped into partisan politics deserved to be subjected to forensic examination and be given the Code of Conduct forms.
“Although the Code of Conduct was put in place to curb corruption, the tendency for public office holders, who loot the public treasury while in office has not been effective enough as politicians in privilege position often escape the long arms of our laws.
“So, i think retired civil servants, heads of agencies and parastaltals should be barred from contesting for any elective post at least one year after retirement for the anti-graft agencies to have the opportunity to investigate them so as to give the public the blueprint as to what transpired while in office,” Mohammed added.
