The Nigeria Police Force Anambra State Command has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden death of veteran journalist Alphonsus Nweze, a respected member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Correspondents’ Chapel, who died in a fatal auto crash.
A statement signed the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Mr. Nweze, a journalist with Apex News, reportedly lost his life on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, following a ghastly accident along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway.

His death has sent shockwaves through the media community, leaving behind family, friends, and colleagues who admired his passion for truth, integrity, and public service through journalism.
According to Ikenga, Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, described Nweze as a fearless and diligent reporter whose work significantly shaped security reportage in the state.
“Mr. Nweze was a committed journalist who stood for fair and responsible reporting. His dedication to his craft earned him the respect of both the Police and the general public,” the statement read.
The Commissioner further extended heartfelt condolences to the NUJ and the Correspondents’ Chapel in Anambra, urging them to take solace in the impactful legacy Nweze left behind.
“We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and ask God to grant his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire media community the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement added.
The Anambra State Police Command joined journalists, media professionals, and well-meaning Ndi Anambra in mourning the passing of Mr. Alphonsus Nweze, describing him as “an irreplaceable gem.”
