The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned the Federal Government against using reports of an alleged coup plot as a pretext to intimidate opposition figures or suppress dissent in the country.
In a statement issued by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said it viewed any threat to Nigeria’s democratic order with utmost seriousness but expressed concern over the government’s handling of the situation.
The ADC noted that despite widespread media reports of a coup plot, the Defence Headquarters had publicly denied ever mentioning such an incident, creating what it described as “conflicting signals” from government sources.

The party warned that the alleged coup narrative could be politically engineered to divert public attention from governance failures and to justify a crackdown on perceived political opponents.
“We, therefore, support any legitimate action that may be taken in defence of our constitution and our democracy. In the same vein, we oppose any ploy by the government to intimidate legitimate voices under the guise of national security,” the ADC stated.
The opposition party said it was particularly worried about “subsequent unattributed media reports” implicating unnamed politicians in the supposed plot, saying such reports could serve as a pretext for political persecution or surveillance of opposition figures.
“What is clear, however, is that the government is exploiting the coup story to divert attention from the real issues of misgovernance in the country and to curry sympathy,” the statement added.
The ADC accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of desperation, warning that such actions could endanger Nigeria’s democracy and undermine citizens’ rights.
It called on the Federal Government to immediately clarify the true nature of the alleged coup plot and urged transparency if there were indeed genuine threats to national security.
“Government must desist from weaponising national security as a pretext to silence opposition and political dissent,” the party said.
