The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it will prioritise a consensus arrangement in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi already emerging as frontrunners.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made the disclosure in a recent interview.
He said that the ADC is focused on strengthening its structures nationwide following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) formal recognition of its new National Working Committee, led by David Mark as chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as secretary.
According to Abdullahi, while zoning and other internal issues will be addressed later, consensus remains the party’s preferred path.
“For the presidential candidate, we are working on consensus. It is only when that fails that we can think of conducting primaries,” Abdullahi told BusinessDay.
Abdullahi added that issues related to selection of candidates will be resolved in due course.
“When we get to that bridge, we will cross it. For now, we are happy that INEC has strengthened the party’s activities by the decision of INEC on Wednesday, to approve the party’s leadership led by David Mark as National Chairman.”
INEC has recently updated its records to reflect the leadership change of the party, recognising Mark and Aregbesola as part of the new National Working Committee.
Their emergence followed the dissolution of the previous committee led by Chief Ralph Nwosu at the ADC’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.
