Residents of a village in Murang’a County were left in shock after a man was found alive inside his burnt house, hours after unknown attackers tied him up and set the building on fire.
According to police reports, the victim, identified as 42-year-old Peter Mwangi, was discovered early Tuesday morning by neighbours who rushed to the scene after noticing smoke coming from his compound. The residents managed to break down the door and were astonished to find Mwangi bound and badly injured but still breathing.
Witnesses said the man was weak and covered in burns when he was rescued. He was rushed to Murang’a Level Five Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for serious injuries. Doctors said his condition was stable but critical.
“We found him unconscious and tied with ropes. It is a miracle he survived because the house was almost completely destroyed,” said a neighbour who helped in the rescue.
Murang’a County Police Commander, Ali Nuno, confirmed the incident and said investigations have been launched to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the brutal act. “We are treating this as an attempted murder case. The victim will be key in helping us trace those behind the attack once he regains full consciousness,” Nuno stated.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have since cordoned off the scene to collect evidence. Early findings suggest that the attackers might have broken into the house at night before setting it ablaze to cover their tracks.
Police have urged residents to remain calm and assist with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
