Tiwa Savage Opens Up: How a Hidden Workplace Romance Drained Me Emotionally

Nigerian singer, Tiwatope Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, has shared unknown parts of her past relationship with a fellow celebrity, describing it as “disrespectful” and emotionally draining.

The singer also clarified why she didn’t consider herself the only Queen of Afrobeats.

Speaking in an interview on Joe Biden’s Podcast, the Afrobeats star revealed that her former partner, whose identity she didn’t disclose, insisted on keeping their romance private, which left her feeling silenced and undermined.

“He told me he didn’t want us to go public. He said, ‘When we’re out, I might be talking to other people, but I’m only doing it so people don’t suspect.’ And I was like, okay, but how far are you going with this?” Tiwa Savage recounted.

According to the ‘Koroba’ hitmaker, the secrecy allowed him to mingle openly with other women at events, sometimes even touching them, while reassuring them with a look.

“He had it good. We might be at the same event, and he’s probably talking, laughing, even touching other ladies while still looking at me like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m just doing it!’ And I couldn’t say anything. It was happening right in front of me,” she added.

Away from her personal struggles, Tiwa Savage also addressed the widespread debate about whether she is the “Queen of Afrobeats.”

She rejected the title, insisting that women’s success in the genre should not be reduced to a single crown.

“I just think that if I say that, then what am I, are the other girls who are doing it and killing it not queens? I think we’re all queens,” she said.

Reflecting on her groundbreaking career, the ‘All Over’ crooner noted that while fans celebrate her as one of the first African female artists signed to Universal Music Group, the milestone came with its own hurdles.

“Before I could be the first, there were a lot of no’s. That’s what I see, the struggle and the challenge,” she concluded.
