Edo PDP members on Saturday defied heavy rainfall to take part in ward congresses, where they elected new executives and delegates across the state’s 192 wards.

At Oredo Wards I, II, and III in Benin City, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria, the exercise was peaceful, with enthusiastic party members turning out in large numbers to cast their votes.

State caretaker chairman of the PDP, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, who observed the exercise alongside members of the Ward Congress Electoral Committee from Abuja, said the turnout reflected the party’s resilience and growing strength.

“The congresses were very peaceful. PDP members were vibrant and active, electing 17-member executives in the various wards we attended. We are excited and cannot thank our members enough for their enthusiasm,” he said.

Aziegbemi admitted he was initially unsure of what to expect but was impressed by the commitment of members who arrived as early as 7:30 a.m. despite the rain.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout. People came out in the rain with so much energy. PDP is rising, and we are confident we will give the APC a run for their money,” he added.

The PDP chairman also expressed optimism that what he described as the “abysmal failure of the government at both federal and state levels” would pave the way for the party to reclaim Edo in 2027.

Chairman of the PDP Ward Congress Electoral Committee, Mr Tariga Tulagha, also commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of the exercise.

“So far, the elections were peaceful and in full compliance with the law. Despite the weather, members came out in their numbers. We observed unity of purpose, and there was no sign of division,” Tulagha said.

He dismissed speculation about internal crisis, noting that voting outcomes reflected overwhelming consensus. “When motions were raised, the ayes were 100 percent, and there were no nays. The issue of factions does not apply here,” he stressed.
