In an interview with TVC News, Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, has addressed the popular claim that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of FCT, is responsible for everything that is going on with the PDP, saying that he has a different point of view.
Showunmi said the challenges in PDP go beyond the actions of one man and reflect long-standing structural issues within the party. He made this remark while reacting to the violent confrontation between two rival factions at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.
The clash, which drew national attention, raised fresh questions about the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 election. Responding to claims by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed that Wike is the main problem of the PDP, Showunmi said the narrative ignores the party’s historical blunders.
He explained that since the party was founded in 1998, the PDP has failed to implement the reforms many members had demanded over the years.
According to Showunmi, if the party had strengthened its internal structure and addressed key weaknesses, no single individual would be powerful enough to disrupt its system to the extent that Wike will have control. He added that Wike’s role must be viewed within the context of the party’s unresolved structural problems.
Showunmi also criticized the frequent disputes over court judgments, noting that members often praise rulings only when decisions favor them. He said this inconsistency demonstrates a broader culture of internal dysfunction that has led the party to its present state.
In his words, “People like to say that Wike is responsible for everything that is going on with the PDP, but I have a different point of view.”
“This is that in the first instance, had the organization been well structured, had the organization been reformed when we were shouting for reform, would one individual be able to do the much that they say one individual is doing? I don’t agree.” Read Original
