A tense confrontation erupted on Tuesday at the Abuja National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after police officers released tear gas to disperse supporters and officials gathered at the complex.
Those caught in the chaos included Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and the party’s factional National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki.
According to The Nation, the trouble began when the three leaders attempted to enter Wadata House but were blocked by the Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led faction, which had secured control of the main entrance.
The situation escalated quickly as rival supporters clashed, creating a highly charged environment around the secretariat. Witnesses said the tension grew so intense that police at the scene fired tear gas canisters to break up the crowd and restore calm.
Party members and supporters scrambled for safety as the gas spread, forcing a temporary halt to activities in and around the building.
In an unexpected turn, the same heavily guarded gate was opened moments later without any resistance when Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike arrived. His easy entry shifted the mood dramatically and raised fresh questions about power dynamics within the crisis-ridden party.
Tuesday’s incident underscores the widening rift within the PDP, as competing factions intensify their struggle for control of the party’s leadership.
The confrontation comes at a time of heightened internal disputes, drawing even more public scrutiny as the PDP positions itself for future political battles.
