Fresh Strike Looms as Crisis Between NUPENG, Dangote Escalates

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike, accusing the Dangote Refinery and its affiliate, MRS Energy Limited, of violating resolutions reached with the Federal Government earlier this week.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the warning was contained in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by NUPENG’s National President, Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale.

The union alleged that Alhaji Sayyu Aliu Dantata, a cousin of business mogul Aliko Dangote, ordered truck drivers—who are long-standing members of the union—to remove NUPENG stickers from their vehicles.

The union claimed that on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Dantata instructed drivers to load products at the Dangote Refinery in violation of union regulations, sparking confrontation with NUPENG officials. The statement further alleged that Dantata “called in naval personnel” after tensions escalated.

“This is to alert the nation that notwithstanding the resolution reached and signed at the office of the DSS with three ministers and the Deputy Director General of the DSS in attendance, Alhaji Dantata has chosen to disregard the agreement,” the statement read.

NUPENG warned that it would not allow “any individual, no matter how wealthy, to undermine the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” stressing that it has placed all members on red alert for a possible return to strike action.

The union also called on the Federal Government, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), civil society groups, and international labour organizations to stand in solidarity, accusing the Dangote Group and its affiliates of “arrogance” and “blatant disrespect for national institutions.”

The warning comes just two days after NUPENG suspended a two-day strike that disrupted fuel distribution nationwide following an emergency meeting with government officials and Dangote representatives.
