The Kano State House of Assembly has called for the cancellation of the ongoing Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) recruitment exercise, alleging that it was biased in favour of southern states.
During plenary on Wednesday, the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, raised concern that the recruitment process failed to reflect fairness and the principle of federal character.
He claimed that the exercise gave more opportunities to candidates from the South, especially Lagos and Ogun states, while states in the North were largely sidelined.
Dala, who represents Dala Constituency under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), described the situation as “unacceptable and unjustifiable.”
He stated that out of the 1,785 candidates recruited nationwide, only about 651 were from the northern region, leaving a huge gap in representation.
According to him, the recruitment should mirror Nigeria’s diversity and ensure equal chances for all geopolitical zones.
He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to cancel the process and set up a fresh committee that would conduct a transparent and balanced exercise.
Other lawmakers supported the motion, backing Dala’s call for northern representatives at the National Assembly to intervene in the matter.
The Speaker of the House praised the motion, saying it reflected true patriotism and a commitment to fairness.
