The camp of former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, has strongly denied media reports claiming that he “fled” the country in connection with alleged security investigations.
In a detailed statement issued on Tuesday, October 29, 2025, by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Julius Bokoru, the former minister described the claims as “damaging falsehoods” designed to mislead the public and tarnish his reputation.
Bokoru confirmed that Sylva’s Abuja residence was recently raided by persons believed to be operatives of the Defence Headquarters, during which significant property damage occurred. However, he noted that neither the reasons for the raid nor its official authorization have been made clear.

“To the best of my knowledge, the officers involved did not provide any categorical explanation for their actions, either at the time or subsequently,” Bokoru stated.
He clarified that Chief Sylva and his wife, Her Excellency Alanyingi Sylva, were outside Nigeria at the time of the raid, attending to personal and professional matters abroad.
“As at my last communication with His Excellency, he was undergoing a routine medical check-up in the United Kingdom, after which he was scheduled to proceed to Malaysia for a professional conference,” he said.
The statement also dismissed online rumours linking Sylva to an alleged coup plot, noting that the Defence Headquarters had already publicly refuted any such claims.
“Chief Timipre Sylva has no involvement whatsoever — either in planning or in logistics — with any coup or unconstitutional activity,” Bokoru emphasized.
He described Sylva as a “thoroughbred democrat” whose political career has been defined by faith in democratic processes and the will of the people, tracing his public service back to his days in the Old Rivers State House of Assembly in the 1990s and his tenure as Governor of Bayelsa State.
Bokoru further recalled Sylva’s unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing his role in mobilizing Bayelsa APC structures in support of the President during the 2023 election cycle.
He accused certain “desperate and narcissistic politicians” of orchestrating the smear campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing Sylva as a formidable political figure whose credibility threatens their ambitions.
“These rumours are nothing more than the handiwork of those who see Sylva as their last real obstacle — a man whose political presence continues to expose their self-serving ambitions,” Bokoru asserted.
The statement concluded with a call for the public to disregard the “baseless and malicious reports”, reaffirming Chief Sylva’s commitment to democratic ideals, peace, and the rule of law.
