The sacked Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, along with the former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, were reported to be set to receive generous retirement benefits following their replacement by President Bola Tinubu.

According to The Punch, their entitlements under the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for Officers and Enlisted Personnel, signed by the President in December 2024, include a bulletproof SUV to be replaced every four years, a backup Peugeot 508, five domestic aides, personal security staff, three drivers, and a standard guard unit of nine soldiers.

They are also entitled to free medical care within and outside Nigeria, and the retention of personal firearms, which are to be retrieved after death. However, the document stated that these benefits would only apply if the retired officers did not take up any new position funded by public resources, except one directly appointed by the President.

Presidential aide Sunday Dare explained that the replacement of the service chiefs was part of the administration’s broader effort to strengthen national security.

A retired soldier, Abdul Isiak, reportedly lamented that the promises made to retired military personnel had yet to be fulfilled, adding that many of them were now struggling to survive.

He said, “All you said they would give to them would be done promptly, and they are more than what we need to sustain our lives. This is very unfair. We have suffered a lot for this country, and they are yet to give us our entitlements after leaving the service. What is our offence? Is it because we are junior officers?”

The former sergeant lamented that while senior officers continued to enjoy generous retirement benefits, those in the lower ranks were being denied their rightful entitlements.

He added that they were preparing for another protest to demand payment, describing the situation as very unfortunate.
