The Founder and Chairman of West Midlands Communications Limited, His Royal Majesty, Oba Murtala Adebayo Akande, MFR, has reaffirmed that Lagelu 96.7 FM, Ibadan’s foremost indigenous radio station, was established not to compete but to celebrate Yoruba culture and give a voice to the people.

Established in 2014 as part of West Midlands Communications Limited, Lagelu 96.7 FM has built a reputation as the leading indigenous radio station in Ibadan. With its blend of culture, entertainment, and information, the station continues to serve as a bridge between tradition and modern broadcasting.

Oba Akande, who is also the Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland and Founder of West Midlands Open University, stated this on Friday at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Lagelu FM, held at Mauve 21 Events Centre, Ring Road, Ibadan.

Reflecting on the station’s decade-long journey, the royal media entrepreneur described the milestone as “a fulfilled dream rooted in purpose and culture.”

“Ten years ago, we unveiled Lagelu FM with a clear vision — to give a voice to the people of Ibadan, to celebrate our heritage, and to build a station that not only entertains but uplifts,” he said.

“Lagelu FM has become more than a frequency on the dial; it is a movement, a bridge between generations, and a beacon of authentic Yoruba expression in broadcasting.”

Oba Akande expressed appreciation to the management, staff, and listeners for their loyalty and commitment, noting that the success of the station underscores that “consistency and integrity remain timeless virtues in broadcasting.”

In her remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of West Midlands Communications Limited, Mrs Atinuke Adetunji, described the station’s evolution as a story of vision, resilience, and purpose-driven journalism.

“Lagelu FM has proven that when purpose meets passion, even the airwaves can become instruments of transformation,” she said.

“Our commitment to excellence, innovation, and authenticity has made the station a model for indigenous broadcasting in Nigeria. The next decade will focus on digital expansion, audience engagement, and deeper community impact.”

She also commended the station’s listeners and staff, whom she described as “the heartbeat of Lagelu FM.”

The General Manager, Operations, Mr. ’Tunde Olawuwo, emphasised the unique identity of Lagelu FM, explaining that the station was founded to serve as the voice of the people, not as a rival to existing stations.

“When we started, people asked why another station was needed when Splash FM already existed,” he recalled.

“But Lagelu FM was not born out of competition; it was born out of conviction. Splash spoke the language of excellence; Lagelu came to speak the language of the people. We became the station where Ibadan found its true voice.”

He added that Lagelu FM’s mission remains to bridge sophistication and culture, modernity and tradition — values that will continue to guide its operations in the years ahead.

The colourful anniversary celebration attracted dignitaries, media professionals, and top entertainers. Highlights of the event included award presentations to individuals recognized for their contributions to community development and cultural advancement.

Among the awardees were Hon. Remi Oseni, Abimbola Adekanbi, Princess Folashade Abeo Nurudeen, Rashidi Ayinde Merenge, Femi Adebayo, Ibrahim Chatta, Chief Mutiu Adetunji, and Ajibola Ogunkeyede.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Hon. Remi Oseni expressed appreciation for the honour, describing it as an encouragement to continue serving humanity.

“One of the greatest things that can happen to anyone is to be celebrated while alive,” he said.

“Some people know what you do but never acknowledge it; gestures like this motivate one to do even more. I appreciate Lagelu FM for this recognition and for their continuous service to the public.”

Also reacting, Abimbola Adekanbi described the award as humbling, noting that being recognised for modest efforts is a reminder to “keep giving back to society.”

The event featured thrilling musical performances by Apala legend, Haruna Ishola, and Fuji artiste, Taye Currency, who entertained guests with electrifying performances that reflected the rich cultural heritage of Ibadan.
