Tensions are brewing within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as loyalists of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, have rejected the endorsement of Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as the party’s next National Chairman.
Naija News reports that Northern PDP leaders recently endorsed Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, at a high-level meeting in Abuja. The meeting was attended by key figures, including Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

However, the decision has sparked controversy. A Northern PDP leader, who spoke anonymously to Punch, said the endorsement has divided the party’s northern bloc. According to him, Lamido’s camp is unhappy because their principal is also eyeing the chairmanship position, while Wike is pushing for a candidate from the North-Central, specifically former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.
“The northern PDP blocs are not united right now,” the source revealed. “Some groups, including ex-state chairmen and former governorship aspirants, are backing Lamido. They are angry that some northern governors and leaders picked Turaki as the consensus candidate without proper consultation.”
Another source aligned with Wike’s camp confirmed the opposition, saying the FCT Minister’s loyalists are holding strategy meetings and press briefings to challenge the endorsement and promote their preferred candidate.
A senior PDP leader explained that the backlash stems from the governors’ failure to engage in wider consultations before announcing Turaki’s name.
“There’s no smoke without fire,” he said. “Some stakeholders in the North-Central and North-West feel disrespected because they were not consulted. While the governors have influence in their states, others believe they deserve a say in such key decisions.”
He, however, expressed optimism that the crisis will be resolved before the party’s national convention.
“These disagreements will eventually calm down,” he added. “The PDP is a democratic party. Once positions are harmonized, we’ll move forward as one family — ready to reclaim power in 2027.”
