The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old married man, Abi Baragon, for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Orineme Ayanate, multiple times after she turned down his marriage proposal.
According to reports, the incident, which occurred in June 2025, left the victim with severe injuries. A viral video captured Ayanate crying for help as she lay in a pool of blood after the attack.
In a statement released on Thursday, October 17, the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that operatives from the Human Rights Department at the State Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, acted swiftly after receiving the viral video. Using intelligence-led policing and technical support, the suspect was apprehended on October 13, 2025.

“It was alleged that the assault stemmed from the victim’s rejection of the suspect’s marriage proposal after discovering he was already married with four children—an accusation the suspect denied. During interrogation, he voluntarily confessed to attacking her with bottles and stabbing her multiple times,” the statement read.
The police spokesperson added that the suspect remains in custody while the victim is receiving medical treatment in the hospital. An investigation is ongoing to uncover more details about the case.
SP Iringe-Koko also noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, commended the officers involved for their swift action and thanked members of the public for providing credible information that led to the suspect’s arrest.
