Favour Michael Kanu, wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has appealed for her husband’s release, urging the Federal High Court in Abuja not to allow him die in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
In an open letteraddressedto Justice James Omotosho on Thursday, Mrs. Kanu expressed grave concern over her husband’s worsening health condition, rejecting a recent medical report by a Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) panel which declared him fit to stand trial.
Describing the report as“disjointed and unethical,”sheallegedit was produced by the DSS rather than the independent medical team earlier directed by the court to examine her husband.

According to her, Kanu remains critically ill and urgently needs proper medical attention outside the DSS facility, which she described as poorly equipped and inadequate for his condition.
Mrs. Kanu pleaded with Justice Omotosho to permit her husband to receive treatment at a reputable hospital within Abuja, insisting that his health continues to deteriorate under currentcircumstances.
“When Your Lordship took over Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case in March 2025, I believed justice was finally at hand, having read of your impeccable reputation. But recent developments in court have left me wondering if those qualities were overstated,” she wrote.
She accused the court of unnecessary delays and indecision, calling the slow pace of proceedings“a deliberate effort to stall justice while my husband languishes in the DSS dungeon.”
The IPOB leader’s wife also faulted the government’s handling of the case, recalling that Kanu was“tortured and subjected to inhumane treatment”after his“illegalabductionfrom Kenya.”
Questioning why her husband is being denied access to quality healthcare, Mrs. Kanu compared his situation to that of Nigerian politicians who routinely seek medical treatment abroad.
“Your Lordship, even the President and Commander-in-Chief travel overseas for medical care because they lack confidence in Nigeria’s health system. Why then should my husband be confined to a DSS facility that worsens his illness?” she asked.
Ending her letter with an emotional plea, she wrote:“You once said Nnamdi Kanu mustbe aliveand healthy to stand trial. What has changed, Your Lordship? Why is his life no longer being taken seriously? My husband has been gravely victimized for far too long.”
