Social media activist,vMartins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), has pledged to significantly reduce the prices of imported phones, gadgets, and other accessories once he returns to Nigeria. VDM criticized the high cost of gadgets in the country, highlighting the excessive markups by local sellers.
He expressed frustration with the current market prices, citing examples of power banks and chargers sold at exorbitant rates compared to their original costs. According to him, “When I hear the price of original power banks here, I shake my head. Power bank priced at ₦36,000 abroad sells here for ₦6,000 to ₦7,000. Original chargers costing ₦15,000 are marked up to ₦120,000 or ₦130,000 in Nigeria.”
Music star and businessman Naira Marley has thrown his support behind VDM’s remarks, accusing some Igbo and Yoruba traders of engaging in what he calls “open extortion.” He condemned the practice of drastically inflating prices on goods imported from China, calling it greed rather than true entrepreneurship.

Naira Marley emphasized that in Islam, such profiteering is considered haram, likening businessmen who disproportionately inflate profits to scammers. Sharing from his own experience as a businessman since 2012, he said, “You cannot buy something for ₦100,000 and sell it for ₦700,000; that’s cheating.”
He also called out wealthy individuals flaunting luxury lifestyles while their communities remain impoverished, stressing that real success lies in making a positive impact, mentoring others, and uplifting those around you.
This outspoken stance from VDM and Naira Marley has stirred discussions on the ethics of pricing and business practices in Nigeria’s gadget market.
