The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has said that good citizens are those who take responsibility for the development of their communities by constructively engaging government not those who resort to social media criticism for political gain.
Speaking during the commissioning of the reconstructed Ken Udezue Street on Thursday the 16th of October, 2025 in Abuja, Wike emphasized that governance thrives when citizens draw attention to public needs rather than attacking government actions online.
“Who is called a good citizen? Not a good man, but a good citizen one who thinks well about the welfare of the country and their community,” Wike said. “It is the responsibility of good citizens to call the attention of government to issues. Not to go on social media and begin to say, ‘they said they have done this and that.’ No government, even if it stays 20 years, can finish every project.”
He revealed that the rehabilitation of the road came about after a friend and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Damian Dodo (SAN), called his attention to its deplorable state. “I called the FCDA to inspect the road, and when they confirmed it was bad, I ordered immediate action. Within one week, work commenced. That’s what a responsive government should do,” Wike said, commending Dodo as a model citizen who acted in public interest.

Wike then took a swipe at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, over his recent criticism of public schools in the FCT, accusing him of playing politics with development.
“Some people, because of politics, castigate government. For example, one of the social media presidential candidates, Mr. Peter Obi, went to a local school and said government has abandoned public education. Mr. Obi, you were governor of Anambra for eight years. If you had finished all the projects, nobody would be talking about development today,” Wike said.
He accused Obi of prioritizing personal profit over public service. “Instead of developing Anambra, you put state funds in your bank to earn interest. How can you claim to love your state or Nigeria? We’ve only been in office for two years, yet our results in FCT speak louder than your eight years in Anambra.”
The Minister also mocked Obi’s frequent media appearances, saying: “You cannot be president of Nigeria by celebrating birthdays in IDP camps or campaigning on social media. You could not manage your party, yet you want to manage a country of over 200 million people. Enough is enough.”
Commending the contractor, Lubrik Construction Company, for the timely delivery of the project, Wike described them as a reliable partner in the ongoing transformation of the FCT under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He further disclosed that President Tinubu has approved several other key interventions, including the construction of alternative access roads to the Body of Benchers complex and 600-bed hostel facilities at the Nigerian Law School, Abuja campus.
“Mr. President responds swiftly whenever we present genuine needs of the people that’s leadership,” Wike said. “This is what the Renewed Hope Agenda stands for: restoring trust between citizens and government, and bringing back confidence that things can truly work again.”
Wike urged FCT residents to emulate citizens like Damian Dodo by constructively engaging government on areas needing attention, rather than politicizing development. “Every responsible government listens to its people. That’s how we build a city that works for all,” he added.
