Senator Ali Ndume has called for improved welfare and better salaries for Nigerian soldiers, stressing that poor pay affects their ability to perform effectively.
During an interview with Channels Television, Ndume explained that before the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Christopher Musa, assumed office, a private in the Nigerian Army earned about ₦49,000 per month, which is roughly $32. He noted that the present government has made some progress by increasing the amount to about ₦104,000 monthly, or approximately $65 to $67 in dollar value.

Despite this improvement, Ndume described the pay as still too low when compared to what soldiers in other countries earn. He highlighted that in the United States Army, a private, referred to as B4, earns about $2,400 every month.
The senator criticized the poor welfare of Nigerian troops, pointing out that their salaries are barely enough to meet basic needs. He questioned how soldiers can be expected to perform effectively when their pay cannot even afford two bags of rice.
Ndume emphasized that the Nigerian Army, which has fewer than 300,000 personnel, deserves better treatment considering the risks they face daily while defending the nation.
In his words, “In the United States Army, a private, as I’m speaking to you, they call them B4, their entry, their Salary is 2,400 dollars per month.”
