Ayo Olowonihi, retired Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), offered personal reflections on Professor Joash Amupitan, recently nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This nomination follows the conclusion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure, which spanned from 2015 to October 2025.
During a televised interview with Arise TV, Olowonihi highlighted his longstanding relationship with Professor Amupitan, noting that they both hail from Kabba in Kogi State.

He shared that Amupitan’s father was his primary school teacher and that both their fathers were educators, which fostered a strong bond between their families. According to him, their shared upbringing and educational background contributed to a friendship that has lasted for decades.
He emphasized that their connection extended beyond family ties, as they also attended secondary school in the same town.

“We all grew up together, I have known him for couple of decades back, we grew up together. His father was my primary school teacher. Our fathers were teachers and that’s how we got together. We went to secondary school in the same town Kabba(Kogi State)”
