Tension is brewing in Akwa Ibom State following the reported withdrawal of security operatives attached to the immediate past governor, Udom Emmanuel.
Checks indicated that police officers stationed at his two residences in the state were recalled over the weekend. The development has triggered speculation, with some alleging it was orchestrated by the All Progressives Congress-led state government to pressure Emmanuel into joining the party. Others see it as evidence of a strained relationship between Governor Umo Eno and his predecessor.
Emmanuel, who played a key role in Eno’s 2023 election victory under the Peoples Democratic Party, has remained loyal to the PDP despite the incumbent’s defection to the APC. His continued support for the opposition party ahead of the 2027 polls is viewed in some quarters as a challenge to the ruling party in the state.

The Akwa Ibom government has denied involvement in the matter. Commissioner for Information Aniekan Umana said in a press briefing that the deployment or withdrawal of police officers is solely the responsibility of the Inspector-General of Police and the state Commissioner of Police, not the governor.
“To the best of our knowledge, there has been no complaint or report from any former governor or their media aides about the withdrawal of security personnel. The rumour exists only in the imagination of those peddling it,” Umana stated, urging the public to disregard what he described as propaganda.
However, Steve Abia, Special Assistant to Emmanuel, confirmed the withdrawal but said he could not identify who ordered it. “The reality on ground is that if you go to the ex-governor’s houses right now, there are no police security men. That is the truth,” he told reporters.
The PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice, a pro-party group, condemned the incident as politically motivated. Its chairman, Tom FredFish, argued that the move was an attempt to weaken the PDP in the state.
“My advice is that they should stop panicking and focus on governance,” he said. The End
