According to a report by Channels Television on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerian leaders to embrace inclusive governance and prepare for the country’s fast-growing population, warning that failure to act could lead to crises worse than Boko Haram.
Speaking at the official opening of the Bakhita ICT Center, organized by the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto on Tuesday, Obasanjo said Nigeria’s diversity should be harnessed for good governance and national progress. “If by our diversity it is taken along with good governance, with everybody being included, inclusive society, then we will get there. And not only will we be respected, we will be counted among the leading nations of the world,” he said.

The former president cautioned that Nigeria’s population will pose a major challenge in the coming decades. “By the year 2050, that’s only 25 years from now, people like the Sultan, His Eminence, will be here. I’m not praying to be here 25 years from now. So you will have the problem of 400 million Nigerians that have to be provided with food, that have to be provided with work, employment, that have to be satisfied,” Obasanjo stated.
He warned that insecurity could worsen drastically if preparations are not made. “And if we fail to prepare for that now, Boko Haram of today will be a child’s play. We have to take care of it now,” he added.
The event, which brought together prominent religious and community leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar III, and Bishop Matthew Kukah, is said to emphasize the role of education and technology in building a secure and inclusive society.
