Lere Olayinka, an aide to Nyesom Wike, has questioned the way Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, addressed the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.
Obi had congratulated Oba Ladoja on his coronation and referred to him as his brother. This, however, did not sit well with Olayinka, who took to his social media page to challenge the choice of words.
In a post via X, he argued that Oba Ladoja, who is 81 years old, is 17 years older than Obi, who is 64. According to Olayinka, it is unusual to call someone much older a brother. To him, such a title does not show the traditional respect usually given to elders in Nigerian culture.

To illustrate his point, Olayinka compared other respected figures. He asked whether Obi would feel comfortable calling the Obi of Onitsha, a highly revered monarch, “my brother.” He also questioned whether Obi could address former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is much older and considered a father figure to many politicians, in the same way.
In his words, “Can you refer to someone who is 17 years older than you as My Brother? Can Mr Peter Obi address Obi of Onitsha as My Brother? Can he address President Obasanjo as My Brother?”
