Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on residents to secure planning permits before starting any construction, emphasizing that attacks on enforcement officials will no longer be tolerated.
Speaking through his deputy chief of staff, Sam Egube, at the 2025 stakeholders’ engagement organized by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) in Oregun on Friday, Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of planning permits for sustainable development.
The event, themed “Planning Permit: The Rebirth,” aimed to educate stakeholders on town planning reforms.Sanwo-Olu likened a planning permit to a building’s birth certificate, essential for ensuring legitimacy, safety, and compliance with standards.

“Without it, we risk chaos, unsafe structures, and communities lacking vital infrastructure,” he said, noting Lagos’ role as a national and international gateway requiring orderly development.
He praised LASPPPA’s grassroots campaigns, including roadshows and debates, but expressed concern over estates blocking officials and residents attacking them during enforcement.
He urged compliance to protect lives and investments, warning that cutting corners would lead to legal consequences.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to simplifying approval processes while maintaining strict enforcement.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olumide Oluyinka, highlighted the low rate of approved buildings and the government’s efforts to address this.
Gbolahan Oki, permanent secretary, Office of Urban Development, cited the recent demolition at the Trade Fair Complex, where illegal structures were built on 300 hectares without permits, as an example of non-compliance.
The Bajuilaye of Lagos, Ayodele Oyekan, urged residents to support officials and channel grievances through proper agencies rather than resorting to violence.
Former Commissioner Toyin Ayinde praised LASPPPA’s decentralized operations and automation but called for a one-stop-shop to streamline agency functions.
Urban planner Abimbola Onaneye emphasized collaboration between government, traditional institutions, and residents for effective land allocation and sustainable development.
