The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Lagos State, George Ashiru, on Friday explained why the party asked the likes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi and others to officially register at the ward level.
Ashiru explained that the ADC was moving into a new phase, hence these bigwigs must register at their wards.
After a closed-door meeting of its stakeholders, the ADC leadership had directed its chieftains to resign from their various parties and register as with the party.
Some members of the opposition coalition who have dumped their various parties are yet to officially join the APC.
Also, some others members of the opposition coalition, who are being linked to the ADC, are yet to resign from the parties where they are card carrying members.
Featuring on News Central’s programme, The 12 Report, Ashiru said: “The coalition in the very first place was the creation of the same political stakeholders in Nigeria. They came together and adopted our party as the platform for a credible alternative coalition.
“So basically what they’re saying now is that let’s move into the next phase, which is let all the political bigwigs now begin to identify directly in their various Wards and in various states, rather than just being coalition leaders, be actual members of the party in a formal sense.
“So that’s a phase, you know, we start with the coalition discussions and the mobilizations and bringing people together, and then people can now begin the registration processes. So I think it’s just an announcement that it’s time for us to move into that phase.
“It’s very interesting, the ADC and the coalition and everybody who’s actually been prominently featured inside of this grand talk. But isn’t that how every political party starts?
“Some people will tell you that, no, wait, I’m coming in six months, I’m coming in three months, I’m coming in four months.
So we’re focusing on the big ones, the ones with the popular names.”
